STEP 2

Take the working end back to the standing part and tie two Half Hitches around the standing part at the point where the first wrap starts. And that is all there is to it.

Always test before raising or lowering a heavy pole and add more wraps as necessary.

Uses

Hang garden tools with a smooth handle such as a hoe or rake.

PRUSIK KNOT

Devised by Dr Karl Prusik from Austria, this knot has become a classic slide-and-grip knot for use on rope. Unusually, it will grip in either direction. It is always made using a sling, either one made of rope (in which case the sling should be of thinner rope than that to which it is being attached) or one specially made and available from outdoor/climbing suppliers (though these are relatively expensive and not designed for everyday use).

As well as its common use in climbing, it is useful in any circumstances where a ‘rope handle’ needs to be attached to another vertical rope, e.g. to hang a hook with a tool bag.

It can also be used as part of the Trucker’s Hitch, in which case a relatively short sling will take the majority of the wear and is easily replaced.

TO TIE

STEP 1

Place a bight of the sling across the main rope.
